On The 2012 Apocalypse

Am I the only one who is worried about the meme-ification of the end of the world? This whole thing HAD to have started out as a joke. But people are obviously taking this December 21, 2012 thing WAY to seriously.

Why is the whole world going to hold their collective breaths on that day? The end of the world is not going to happen because the Myan calender rolls over to it’s next long-count cycle.

CGP Grey has a video on why the world will not end scientifically. I could never hope to match his eloquence. Watch it, and understand.

Anyway, I am not concerned in any way about the world ending, from a scientific standpoint. What I am concerned about… are people. I’m not sure how half of the world will react as they hold their breaths praying that civilization won’t be destroyed by some kind of doomsday. The world has 7 billion people. Just one of them can cause some serious damage.

I am scared to get out of my house that day. A person who truly believes he or she is going to die can be very very dangerous. So I shall now write a letter to society.

Dear World,

Please have some common sense as you go about your daily routine on Friday, December 21, 2012. Please try to set aside your inherent sense of panic when faced with imminent doom. We may very well come to that point as a society in the future, but it will not be because of some stupid myth perpetrated by people who lack sound knowledge. Continue to live for tomorrow, for tomorrow will come.

Matt (from A Link to the Matt)

My advice to the readers of this blog, who are sane and rational. Be careful on that day. It will not be a fun one.

Matthew Estes

Matthew Estes currently exists in the ether between graudate student and full-time worker. One day he hopes to be a full-time novelist and blogger, but until that day comes he spends his time playing video games, eating pizza, and being with his soon-to-be wife. However, he has yet to do all three at the same time. Bucket list stuff, you know.
